Mount Athos. A journey through ten centuries.
In 963 AD, the arrival on the Athos peninsula, in Halkidiki, of a monk from the Kymina Monastery in Asia Minor will be of particular significance. It is Saint Athanasius the Athonite who will bring to the peninsula the concept of the Lavra, that is, the large organized communal Monastery. Gradually, the Athos peninsula will experience its new monastic flourishing and will be transformed into a sacred place, an eternal garden of the Virgin Mary, a place of permanent prayer and worship of the divine.
Στα 963 μ.Χ. η άφιξη στη χερσόνησο του Αθω, στη Χαλκιδική, ενός
μοναχού από τη Μονή Κυμινά της Μικράς Ασίας θα έχει ιδιαίτερη
σημασία. Είναι ο Όσιος Αθανάσιος ο Αθωνίτης που θα μεταφέρει
στη χερσόνησο της έννοια της Λάυρας, δηλαδή της μεγάλης
οργανωμένης κοινόβιας Μονής. Σταδιακά η χερσόνησος του Αθω θα
γνωρίσει τη νέα μοναστηριακή της άνθηση και θα μεταμορφωθεί σε
τόπο ιερό, περιβόλι αιώνιο της Παναγίας, χώρο της μόνιμης
προσευχής και λατρείας του θείου.
